AI Tech Startup CoeFont are Bringing Japanese Libraries into the Future

CoeFont Co., Ltd., a registered startup company at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, developer and provider of services utilizing AI, announced that CoeFont digital voices will be used with applications and services to assist blind and low-vision individuals at Shinjuku City Toyama Library in Tokyo, Japan. Shinjuku City Toyama Library, Tokyo, has enlisted the help of rising AI tech startup CoeFont, to provide better support for individuals with low vision and blind people. The highly realistic digital voices will be used with various applications and services, including an audio version of the library newsletter.
CoeFont’s digital voices will be used with the following applications/services:
- Library Information
- Voice of the Library Newsletter (Audio Version)
- Accessibility tools used with Digital Talking Books (DTB), such as DAISY
※ DAISY (the Digital Accessible Information System) is the global standard for digital talking books designed for people who are blind or have a print disability. DAISY provides talking book readers the same flexibility as standard print readers, including navigation by chapter, section, subsection, and page.
CoeFont have been offering free AI voice creation and use to individuals at risk of losing their voice since 2021. As of May 2023, over 400 people have benefited from the free plan. Users and their families have conveyed their appreciation for the service, which they say has given them hope for the future, and also expressed the wish for more people to learn about the initiative.
